LA Lit and Toy ShowThe 34th annual Literature, Toy/Model and Memorabilia Meet for Porsches and Vintage VW’s will be held again at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton on Century Boulevard close by L.A. International Airport.  The meet will be on our traditional first weekend in March, Saturday, March 4th, 2017. That date avoids all known conflicts with the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, etc. For 2017 we will continue to have the Hilton’s International and Pacific Ballrooms plus adjacent hallways behind registration and the elevators on the main level. We will have room for about 195 tables in the International Ballroom and about 90 more in the Pacific, plus about 15 in the hallways. For the past three years we overflowed into the hallways

The history of Belgians in the world’s greatest race goes back to 1923, the year of the first edition. One hundred and one drivers and 296 participations resulted in 12 overall victories, 24 podium finishes, 48 class victories and one Ladies’ Cup. A rich harvest, to be sure! Swaters, Beurlys, Bianchi, Frère, Gendebien, Mairesse, Rouselle and Dubois played a leading role in the first ‘yellow armada’.

The second wave did just as well, with drivers like Ickx, Boutsen, Dieudonné, Van de Poele, Duez, De Drijver, Witmeur, Libert, “Christine”, Regout and many others.

The exhibition “Belgians in Le Mans” that will be organised (with the support of the Belgian section of the “Automobile Club de l’Ouest”) in the magnificent setting of Autoworld in May and June 2018 will honour them with some of the cars in which they competed. We can already announce the following cars: a Peugeot 905, an Argo-Porsche, a Porsche 934, a Shelby 350GT, etc. Various iconic cars that participated in the race and are usually exhibited in the Le Mans Track Museum will move to Brussels especially for this exhibition.

This year the legendary brand from Zuffenhausen celebrates its 70th birthday. In 1948 Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry Porsche showed a small sports car based on the Volkswagen that had been developed by Ferdinand for the first time. The engine was based on the Volkswagen 1131 cc 4-cylinder boxer; the gearbox and steering box also came from Volkswagen. That first 356 was a spyder. It immediately won the first race in which it participated. In August of that same year a coupé followed, 50 units of which were built. The rest is history. Porsche developed into one of the most successful sports car brands of all time, and today too both the new and the old models rank high on the wish list of many an aficionado.

Four years ago Autoworld already devoted a world-class exhibition to the work of Ferdinand Porsche. In this exhibition the emphasis lies entirely on the history of the brand. It is told making use of over fifty unique models and race cars. We can count on the support of not only Porsche Belgium, but also the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen and numerous collectors. The exhibition will open on 14 December and runs until 27 January 2019.
