Interclassics Brussels has 2 major themes in 2018

Sixty years ago, the World Expo was held from 17 April to 19 October 1958 at the Heyzel grounds in Brussels under the name ‘Expo ‘58’. On 7 May 1948, the Belgian government decided to organise the World Expo to be held in 1955. However, the outbreak of the Korean War caused delays in the schedule and the government postponed the event to 1958. This World Expo was dominated by the belief in freedom and progress, a concept that was so characteristic of the 1950s and 1960s. Expo 58 was forever indelibly imprinted in the collective memory. It is without a doubt one of the most important events in Belgium’s post-war history. Opened by King Boudewijn, the Expo drew 42 million visitors. The most important and iconic element of Expo 58 is undoubtedly the Atomium; nine gigantic spheres that together depict an iron crystal structure, magnified 165 billion times. 60 years later, we will take a look back at the Expo 58 during InterClassics Brussels 2018. We will celebrate this auspicious anniversary with a special exposition featuring a unique collection of cars from the year 1958 in cooperation with the Belgian Vintage Vehicles Association (BFOV) in Hall 5.

    70 YEARS PORSCHE 356

Fast, pure and full of emotion and experience: Porsche has been synonymous with the ultimate sports cars for 70 years now. The brand was built on the life’s work of Professor Ferdinand Porsche, a tradition continued by his son Ferry. The very first Porsche was registered on 8 June 1948; the 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster was built by Ferry Porsche. Porsche used many Volkswagen parts in the production process such as the air-cooled Boxster engine. The reason for this was that Ferdinand Porsche was involved in the development of this car in the 1930s. The mechanical parts including the engine, the shock absorber and the chassis were all built by Volkswagen. The Porsche 356 remained in production until 1965. Between 1948 and 1965, 76,313 models of the Porsche 356 were built. The 356 was followed by the Porsche 911. The 356 was the realisation of the sports car that Ferry Porsche had always dreamt of. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume: ‘His vision is still reflected in everything that continues to make the Porsche brand so special today.’ Porsche’s anniversary year will be celebrated under the motto ‘70 years of Porsche sports cars’. An exceptional collection of Porsche 356s will be on display in Hall 6 during InterClassics Brussels 2018.

This year the legendary brand from Zuffenhausen celebrates its 70th birthday. In 1948 Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry Porsche showed a small sports car based on the Volkswagen that had been developed by Ferdinand for the first time. The engine was based on the Volkswagen 1131 cc 4-cylinder boxer; the gearbox and steering box also came from Volkswagen. That first 356 was a spyder. It immediately won the first race in which it participated. In August of that same year a coupé followed, 50 units of which were built. The rest is history. Porsche developed into one of the most successful sports car brands of all time, and today too both the new and the old models rank high on the wish list of many an aficionado.

Four years ago Autoworld already devoted a world-class exhibition to the work of Ferdinand Porsche. In this exhibition the emphasis lies entirely on the history of the brand. It is told making use of over fifty unique models and race cars. We can count on the support of not only Porsche Belgium, but also the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen and numerous collectors. The exhibition will open on 14 December and runs until 27 January 2019.

There is no need to present Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille with its fifth edition taking place on Sunday June 30th 2019. This event will now occur every two years, alternating with Le Mans Classic.

Multiple awards – including a sponsorship from the Ministry of Culture and Communication and winner of the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Awards 2017 – have given this event the international renown and fame required to be on the classic automobile contests’ podium. During this event the relaxed atmosphere of a Sunday afternoon in the countryside allows us to celebrate l’art de vivre à la française in many different sectors such as the motorcar industry, gastronomy, art and luxury but it also underlines a whole way of life.

The event will still have its three automobile contests: Les Plus Belles Voitures du Monde, for classic cars only, the Concours d’Elegance with car manufacturers associating themselves with high-end couturier and finally the Clubs’ contest and their glamourous picnic. Returning the event, two rallies with one destined to classic cars and one for modern supercars. A vast and diverse array of activities will also be part of the celebration, suitable for everyone.
