Monterey is a coastal city, located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay in central California, just a few hours south of San Francisco. It has some great touristic attractions as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf, or the famous 17-mile drive, recognized as one of the most scenic drives in the world. The famous coastal landmark runs through Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach, from the dramatic Pacific coastline to the majestic Del Monte Forest. The awe-inspiring vistas and legendary sites can easily fill an entire day with exploration and discovery of some of California’s best-known landmarks : Spanish Bay, Cypress Point Lookout and Carmel Bay. Those into music know without any doubt the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.
However, this time of the year the Monterey region is crowded with petrolheads coming from all over the world to be part of the action-packed Monterey Car Week, that starts August 10th to last till August 16. Thousands of visitors and participants booked their hotelrooms months in advance, since they’re all booked out. Dozens of events are organized in and around Monterey, all of them are worth the visit. However, due to the overwhelming offer of events, you definitely have to plan your visits in advance to make sure you make the best out of it.
A very interesting event is the Automobilia Monterey. The event is in it’s 13th year yet and he largest automobilia show in America. About 50 worldwide renown dealers of automobilia participate in the event. August 11 and August 12 this is the place to be be if you are on the hunt for some literature or rare memorabilia. The event is hosted at the ballroom of the Embassy Suites, located on US 1, just north of 68 [to Laguna Seca & Salinas].
The eyes of the classic car world are all directed towards the Monterey Car Week too. All major auction houses have an auction with sometimes very exclusive and rare cars : in a future article we will bring you the highlights of the different auction houses what considers Porsche, as there are some significant and important Porsches auctioned too.
Of course there is no Monterey Car week without the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, hosted at the legendary Laguna Seca racetrack, where the competitors have to deal with the extremely dangerous Corkscrew corner, and without any doubt the burning heat. Next to the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’elegance, an event where the most beautiful and exclusive cars are shown to the rich and famous that gather at the Concours d’Elegance, to conclude a week that breaths petrol and cars.
