Porsche Sound Nacht 2017

1970 Porsche 917KH Coupe ‘Weissach Taxi’

The Porsche 917 is probably one of the best recognised race cars Porsche ever produced.  There’s no doubt the major role it played in many of the sportive successes in the early 1970s is one of the reasons. Another reason is the Le Mans Movie by Steve Mcqueer ofcourse. When Walter Zipser asked Kurt Ahrens and  Rudi Lins about the top speeds of the iconic Porsche 911 and he mentioned the 400km/h, Kurt Ahrens immediately replied in a very convinced way : At least.

Both Kurt Ahrens and Rudi Lins explained many drivers refused to drive the Porsche 917 because it was so brutal , and the handling of the car was close to a catastrophy. Kurt Ahrens emphasized exactly as his colleague Gijs van Lennep did earlier, how lucky he was to be still around. Kurt Ahrens told us he only knew after his race career that tyre manufacturers only guaranteed safe tires until 350km/h, even though they reached speeds of 400km/h and over.

Funny thing to know about this particular chassis, Porsche 917-015 (035) served as a “taxi’ at the Porsche test track in Weissach to give prominent visitors a ride on the track. Recently it could be seen at the 2017 Zandvoort Historic GP with Jan Lammers at the wheel.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

Mark Lieb, Richard Lietz and Romain Dumas were the pilots that shared the wheel of the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR at the Le Mans 24H endurance race that year.  Even though all the pilots agreed 2 weeks before the race, that  the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR was  not ready for Le Mans, the engineers set them at ease with the words : we have a Le Mans set up.

And to the great surprise of them all, the car ran very well. And not only did the car a good job, the pilots managed to a class victory in the LM GTE Pro class. However, the dangers that comes with motorsports stroke back again that night. The class victory of the Porsche AG Manthey team was overschadowed by the fatal crash of  Allan Simonson in an Aston Martin shortly after the start of the race.
