After many years of Classic Days at Schloss Dyck, the organization decided to move the Classic Days to the “Green Park” near the Düsseldorf Airport. And honestly, I had my doubts beforehand. Why would one move from a splendid location like the Schloss Dyck and its surroundings to a parking place? So I went to the 2022 edition of the Classic Days with mixed feelings. But I must admit that they were somewhat dispelled. The Classic Days still are a great celebration of cars and a tribute to the automotive history and lifestyle. There is a reason the Classic Days are compared to the Goodwood Revival.
As soon as I entered the premises I felt this was not just a parking place. I stepped back in time and enjoyed the atmosphere. And just as always, you could stroll around between a great variety of classic vehicles. And you can see that broad. Wherever you see, you find passenger and sports cars, motorcycles, tractors, trucks, buses, tour rally and racing cars, caravans, brand clubs, a Concours d’ élégance, and food trucks. All that beauty was larded with fun music from strings and bands.
The Classic Days are known for their ‘Sonderlauf”, a presentation of cars on a specially laid track. This was always a great spectacle in previous editions. However, in Düsseldorf, the track was not the way we hoped for, and was far from looking great. It was just like a kind of oval that separated the event from the visitor’s parking. Sure, it gave an opportunity to see and hear what races looked like ages ago. But nevertheless, we encourage the organization to try to ameliorate the racing legends parts.
Despite our mixed feelings beforehand, we had a splendid day. And we realize it is not easy for an event to move from one location to another. Of course there are some flaws, and we are convinced it will only be better next year, August 4-6 2023. We’re looking forward and hope to see you there too.
