A very wet Spa Classic.. but a fantastic one

Roberto Benucci - 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0 (CER1 - Spa Classic 2024)

Spa Classic by Peter Auto belongs to the events that each fan of classic race cars should consider visiting. One of the reasons is the legendary track, which is often mentioned when asked for the most beautiful circuits in the world. But the main reason of course is the wide variety of race cars that come into action on the track. We told you in a previous article about the different series in this year’s Spa Classic, and we shed a short light on what the last day before the actual event looked like.

The 2024 Spa Classic had, as is not abnormal in Spa, different weather conditions. But one could say that looking back at the event, it was an extremely wet one. On Friday, rain fell down almost all day, sometimes truly pouring down and almost turning the tarmac into a river. Not exactly the best conditions to drive and the result often was a lot of FCY moments and red flags. In the late afternoon, some of the races were even canceled because of the torrential rain, which made racing completely impossible.

Saturday the weather was better, and even the sun showed up every once in a while. That in its turn caused some fog to rise from the tarmac due to evaporating water. But at least, there was no need to cancel races on Saturday. You can find the list of results at the bottom of the article. Club track sessions gave the opportunity to the competitors to prepare for the next race or to enjoy a short break. And we always wonder whether during club sessions some sparks are ignited to start racing too. The large crowd that conquered the rain enjoyed the action on track and in the paddocks.

Peter Auto events are popular among the public for the easy access to the cars and drivers. At Spa Classic, the organization prepared a Porsche 917 exhibition which we previously announced. Honestly we found it a bit disappointing, even though those words are probably too harsh. About a dozen of the cars that dominated endurance racing were announced, and 5 showed up. And in the demo run on Saturday, it was just Philippe Siffert, son of Jo Siffert, who drove his father’s Porsche 917/10-002. But we know we are spoiled by visiting Rennsport Reunion a few times, where the 917 is a common sight.
