John Willhoit Restoration Open House

Porsche and Bratwurst in Long Beach.

It has become a tradition in the meantime. The open house of Willhoit Restoration in Long Beach is a highlight in the LA Lit and Toy Show weekend. No wonder so many porsche fans take their car for a ride to Long Beach.  From early in the morning, it is a coming and going of visitors from all over the world. It looks as if the Porche middle of the world is at John Willhoit Open House. And there is a very good reason for this. Willhoit is a name that sounds like a bell in Porsche circles. This is one of the shops to come to, when you consider a concours restorations. Just that makes a visit to John Willhoit Open House worthwile.

But there is more. Ofcourse you can smell the atmosphere of a concours restoration workshop. But you’ll only get a small impression. It would be great if we could see some of Willhoit’s craftsmen at work. Unfortunately that is not the case. But the cars in the workshop, and in the shop on the other side of the street, make everything up. You always find some amazing cars at Willhoit’s place. The real treasure this year was the 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS. This particular car was originally delivered to Sonauto of France. First owner was the Porsche dealer of Cannes who sold it to a man that converted it to a rally car. He participated in    several Monte-Carlo rallies. The next owner entered the car in the Tour Auto. Recently the car returned to the livery when it first participated in the  Rally de Monte Carlo 1977.

At noon time, Willhoit Restorations seems to turn into a German bbq party. People start queueing for a german style “Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut”.  Combine that with a softdrink, some good company to have some Porsche chat, and a south Californian sun, and you know you won’t see anything but happy people and smiling faces. Thanks to the complete Willhoit Restorations team for the hospitality. We hope to be back next year.
