All the information about the Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8 you need
The Porsche RS models always have a mythical sphere hanging around them. The successors of the iconic 1973 Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS, with the typical duck-tale, are the Porsche 911s that Porsche fans are hunting for. The sportiveness is not the only reason. Most of the Porsche RS models are limited series, what makes it the car even more wanted. Nothing else with the Porsche 964 Carrera RS. It is one of the rarest 911 RS models ever built. Just 55 Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8s left the factory as a street car, another 49 as a race car : the Porsche 964 Carrera RSR 3.8. One of these extremely rare cars was auctioned not that long ago at Villa D’erba Concours d’Elegance
In the early 1990s, Jürgen Barth was the head of the customer sports department. Together with project manager Roland Kussmaul, they developed the idea of putting together a concept for a sports car based on the legendary Porsche 911. The car was built with the goal to compete in different series like the ADAC GT Cup, or endurance races like Le Mans 24H or the Spa-Francorchamps 24H.
That same Jürgen Barth is one of the co-authors of this book “Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8”. So it won’t surprise you, this book explains the complete history of this wonderful car in detail. The numerous pictures, coming from different sources like the Porsche Archives and the private archives of collectors, illustrate everyhting you need to know about the 107 cars that were ultimately built. The book starts with the concept, and brings the complete lifespan of the Porsche 964 Carrera RS. The book contains information that fits the needs of anyone. There’s press releases, documentation and homologation sheets for the purists. In case you’re more interested in racing, a detailed racing history is provided. And above all, it contains very detailed information about all the cars that ever left the Weissach factory
Too bad books like these aren’t published more often. This is an absolute must have in your library. Good news for the Porsche fans that don’t master the German language. This fantastic book is now available in English too.
