The Bonhams Scottsdale auction : the results

Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolet (C) Bonhams

ex Robert Redfords Porsche 904 Carrera GTS remains unsold

The 2 highlights we spoke about in our preview of the Bonhams Auction in Scottsdale, were the ex Robert Redford Porsche 904 Carrera GTS and the 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 GS Cabriolet.
No need to say both cars are pretty rare. With just over 100 cars built, combined with celebrity ownership,  we had a strong price in mind for the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS (chassis 904-012).  However, we were wrong. Bidding stuck at $1,200,00. Not exactly the price the seller would want his car to be sold for.

We had no opportunity to inspect the car ourselves. Was something wrong with the car? One thing is for sure: we do have a doubt about the Robert Redford ownership too, as there were no pictures of the actor with the car. Maybe that made potential buyers doubt? And in a market with downgoing prices, doubts usually don’t do any good to high hammer prices.

Only 64 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolets were built. And unfortunately, we cannot tell you how many have survived. Sure thing, that won’t be much. So we predicted a hammer price of well over $1,000,000. In the end, we were right, but with a final hammer price of $ 1,000,500, the bidding stopped at a price well below the estimations. And just as in the auctions of the other 2 major auction houses, RM Sotheby’s and Gooding & Co, that seemed to be the atmosphere.

The auctioneer hammered down the cars at prices under the estimation fork. Definitely another sign that the market is going down. And maybe the auctioneers should adapt their estimations to the slower market, and aim not that high as they used to do. We’re wondering about the prices in the auctions next week in Paris.
