Biography Troy Lee McHenry
Dr. Troy McHenry, a noted orthopedic surgeon, was killed in a race at the Second Annual Pomona Sports Car Races. The races were sanctioned by the Cal Club, a region of the Sports Car Club of America.
Prior to the Pomona FM race, Troy McHenry was seen adjusting the steering on his Porsche 550. He lost control on lap one, and was motioning to his crew that he had no steering…and then seconds later, he crashed directly into the only tree on the course– killing him instantly.
Dr. McHenry was chief of staff and chairman of the executive board of Doctors Hospital from 1941 to 1955. He was a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. McHenry was to be installed as president of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons on October 28 in Detroit. He was senior attending physician in orthopedic surgery at the Los Angeles County Osteopathic Hospital.
In addition to his enthusiasm for sports car racing Troy Lee McHenry was an accomplished yachtsman. He had competed in several trans-Pacific yacht races from San Pedro to Honolulu. Dr. McHenry was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
Dr. McHenry’s Porsche had front and rear supsension parts from the Porsche 550 Spyder of James Dean. These parts were bought by Troy Lee McHenry from Dr. William Eschrich who purchased the wrecked remains of Dean’s Porsche from the Pacific Indemnity Insurance Company for $2,500.
