June 22 1981 is a milestone in the history of Porsche. That day, the Porsche board decided to build a Group C car to compete in the 1982 Word Endurance Championship. Since January 1981, that direction had been leaning in but to that day, the details and regulations of Group C were too vague to release the finances. Immediately an engineering team was formed for project 956. Less than a year later, on March ,1st 1982, Porsche 956-001 was completed.
