Instead of following the usual route through Formula 3, Ammermüller moved straight into GP2, the vestibule of Formula 1. He was supported by Red Bul and became a team member of the Red Bull Racing Formula Team in 2007.  Ammermüller attracted attention by winning a race in this hotly contested class almost immediately. Red Bull’s Formula One team attracted Ammermüller as a test driver.

Ammerüller also represented Germany in the A1GP championship. His prosperous career was dented by an accident in GP2 in 2007. He had to skip a number of races which left him only 26th in the championship. Shortly thereafter, he lost the support of Red Bull and with it his role as a Formula One test driver. In 2008, Michael Ammermüller took a step back. He competed in the Formula 2000, 3. In the international championship, he won one race and finished third. In the winter of 2008/2009, he drove a few races in A1GP. After not racing at the international level for some time, he entered the FIA GT championship in 2010.

From 2013 on to 2019, Ammermüller was active in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, with the exception of 2014. That year Ammermüller only raced the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, to become vice-champion. He mastered the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and crowned himself a champion for 3 consecutive years, in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In the same seasons, Ammermüller started in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, but he had not the same success. He finished the season twice as runner-up and once in the 3rd position.
