It is impossible to deny that Porsche too, from the start, had this in mind. As soon as it started producing cars, they became active in motorsport. No other brand celebrated as much triumphs and victories than Porsche. It looks almost impossible to document the history of Porsche in motorsport. However, exactly that was the question of former chief of the Porsche Archives Dieter Landenberger, and Jens Torner, responsable for the Porsche image archives to Randy Leffingwell, the renowned American author during one of his many visits to the Porsche Archives in Stuttgart.
Leffingwel, who has quite a few books to his name, is not shy of a challenge, and accepts it. He immediately realizes that this will be a daring task, and that it will be impossible to capture the complete history of Porsche in motorsports in one book. Indeed, after unlimited access to the Porsche Archives, and over a decade of research and numerous interviews, the result will be a multi-volume set of which this one is the first. Volume 1 start in 1968, just in time for the creation of the legendary Porsche 917 and sort of a pivotal year. It covers the entire racing-year, from back-room meetings determining the future direction to fabrication testing and practices leading to nearly 90 race and event reports, in the words of managers, drivers and mechanics.
Jens Torner opened up his treasure troves at the Museum, to allow Leffingwel to document the history with numerous unpublished pictures, charts, and illustrations. The final result is just awesome. This book isn’t about the cars, but documents the events they were the main actors in. Fabulous, just fabulous, and we’re so looking forward to the next volumes. And honestly, with a price like this, there is absolutely no reason to not have it in your libary.
