The Porsches in the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction in Monterey

Bonhams has quite a selection of Porsches that come up for sale in the Quail Lodge Auction in Monterey. No less than 35 Porsches will cross the block to be auctioned.  7 of them are real early Porsches. At least, that’s what I call a Porsche 356. From the 7 early ones, there’s one true race car, a 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Spyder. 21 cars belong are a Porsche 911 or derivative and 4 are the Porsche 912 . Ouf of these 21 Porsche 911s, 3 left the factory in the 1960s. 4 more Porsche 911s are from the 1970s. Another 7 Porsche 911s from the 1980s and 2 from the 1990s. The last 4 can be considered rather new, as they are cars from 2000 or later. Well, new : what’s in a name.

Porsche 718 RSK-028

My personal favorite is the Porsche 718 RSK Spyder (718-028). Reason for that is that my compatriot, late Christian Goethals, used this car in quite some races. Porsche RSK 718-028 was delivered with “center-seat” adaptation in 1959 to Goethals. Among others, Christian Goethals twice won the GP de Leopoldville (Congo) . The car is in the the current collection since 1993, and has contested  in all 5 Rennsport Reunions. Next to that it  has participated in over 100 historic race meetings and is a concours class winner at The Amelia.

Porsche 356 Carrera Coupe and Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Coupe

More 4-cam fun at the Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, with the 2 Porsche 356 equipped with an engine, designed by Ernst Fuhrmann. The 1957 Porsche 356 Carrera Coupe initially left the factory with a Silver Metallic Paint. Even though there are uncertainties about where the car spent its early days, indications that the car spent its entire life in California are present. The current owner bought the car in 1975. At that time, the 4-cam engine was lost.  In 2010, the owner bought a period correct 4-cam engine and had it restored and installed by renowned 4-cam specialist Bill Doyle. Since restoration, the car only has about 1500 miles on the counter.
