Derek Bell is a man who has one of the most appealing tracks in motorsports with 5 Le Mans 24 hours victories, 3 victories in the Daytona 24 Hours , 2 World Sportscar Championship titles, and numerous victories in different race series. Despite that it isn’t that easy to find a book about the man who’s name is inextricably linked to Porsche. In his long and very succesful motorsports career as a racing driver, Derek Bell has raced most of the Porsche race cars ever built. In the book “Derek Bell : All my Porsche races”, Derek Bell collaborates with Richard Heseltine to bring report of each and any of the races Derek Bell raced at the wheel of a Porsche. The authors give the reader a personal insight in the experiences Derek Bell had racing cars like the Porsche 917, or the extremely succesful and iconic Porsche 956 and Porsche 962.
Next to the stories about the different Porsches and races, Derek Bell tells the reader some exciting histories about other legendary racers. Jacky Ickx, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Jochen Mass , and some more unfortunate racers who paid the highest price for their hunger to victory : Jo Siffert and Stefan Bellof. The book has 276 pages and there’s no doubt Derek Bell and Richard Heseltine could have filled another volumes with stories. And to speak the truth : that would have been great. It never stops pleasing reading stories about Derek Bell, and the cars he used to race on legendary tracks as Spa-Franchorchamps, Daytona, Sebring, Brands-Hatch , ….
I loved the book from the first second I started reading, and even though familiar with many of the facts told, the book fascinated me all the way to the end. “Derek Bell – All my Porsche races is a book” is a great book, with awesome pictures and there’s no reason a Porsche and motorsportsfan should not have it in the library.
