Looking back at the 49th AvD Oldtimer GP at the Nürburgring

After 2 years, we headed back to the Nürburgring for the AvD Oldtimer GP. It was a long time since we went there. Last year, the event was canceled since the local government used the premises as headquarters to coordinate all the work and services needed to help the victims of the flooding. So both drivers and spectators were eager to find out what the packed program had to offer.

The race series at the AvD Oldtimer GP

Quality and action rest assured when the Masters series strike down on your track. The AvD Oldtimer GP had 4 of them: the Masters Endurance Legends, the Masters Sports Car Legends, the Masters Racing Legends for F1 cars 1966-1985 and the Masters Gentlemen Drivers. For many, a highlight of the event was the first appearance of the DTM Classic Cup, in which many of the drivers of back then took the wheel again of cars like the BMW M3 , Mercedes Benz 190 Evo and Opel Calibra.

In the heydays of the AvD Oldtimer GP, the Revival Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft was a highlight. To our disappointment, only Christopher Stahl showed up in a Porsche 935. But there were a few Porsche 934/5 and quite some Porsche 911 RSRs to make that up again. The CanAm/Sportscar & Group C race had some great cars in it, even though it looked like a strange mixture of cars. The ex-Willi Kauhsen Porsche 917/10 (chassis 917/10-001) drew the most attention.

A personal highlight is the 2seater and GT race on Saturday. The race starts in daylight, but after a while the sun sets, and the race continues in the dark.  It usually has some rare early cars in it, and nothing else was the case this year with a Porsche 718 RSK, and some Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. In the Dunlop Gentle Drivers race, Peter Iversen from Denmark entered his Elva Porsche.  And what a surprise it was to see the ex-George Follmer Lotus Porsche at work too.

The 49th edition of the AvD Oldtimer GP was not the best edition so far. And we didn’t expect that either, after the 2-year interruption. We were happy to be on the track and to be a witness to the restart of an event that, after a stop forced by external reasons, needs to get speed again. And we are convinced it will. Mark the 2nd weekend of August 2023 in your agenda, we will be there. More information on the website of the organization https://oldtimergrandprix.com/en/
