The German Publisher Franzis turns Porsche enthusiasts into 4-cam specialists

One of the most mythical engines Porsche has ever built is the legendary 4-cam Carrera engine. The power plant of  iconic cars like the Porsche 550 Spyder, the Porsche 718 Spyder or the Porsche 356 Carrera’s is an absolute masterpieces when it comes to ingeniosity. Back in the 50s and early 60s, the Porsche Carrera engine, type 547, was not the cheapest one could buy. That declares why not that many were built. Maintaining or rebuilding a Carrera 4-cam engine was a job only highly trained mechanics could bring to a good end. Nowadays it is even more difficult to rebuild one. It is very hard to find the parts. On top of that both the engines and the parts have become very expensive

The German publisher Franzis made a fully working scale model of the Porsche Carrera 4-Cam engine. A model that comes in over 300 pieces and has to be assembled to become the piece of art it is. The transparent functional model as a kit was developed jointly with the Porsche Museum according to original drawings.  The crankshafts, pistons and valves move in real interaction. Even the ignition sparks in the cylinders are simulated by LEDs. The transparent housing parts make the mechanics of the engine and the engine construction visible and comprehensible from the outside. The integrated sound module with original Porsche engine sound is another highlight of this detailed replica of the technical masterpiece from Zuffenhausen.

From now on, you have the possibility to become a 4-cam mechanic too. By following the detailed instruction manual, included in the box, you’ll be able to build your own functional 4-cam scale model engine in about 6 hours. The 112 page instruction manual tells the story of the engine, designed by Ernst Fuhrmann, and is illustrated with drawings and pictures from the Porsche archives in Zuffenhausen. Too bad you can’t use it in your car. But the result is definitely worth a place between your other Porsche models and memorabilia.
The Porsche Carrera Engine model kit is available at the publisher’s website.
