2 days of auction fun in the Portola Hotel and Spa in Monterey
The Monterey Car Week looks promising, and car aficionado’s from all over the world are traveling to California for another great automotive week. We reported before on the cars that Bonhams Auction will be hammering at the Quail Lodge. RM Sotheby’s managed to get some great cars in the Monterey Auction too. From the differen Porsche 911 RS models that will come on the block August 18th and 19th, the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Lightweight is a car that probably will attract quite some buyers and probably fetch a rather heavy price. At the Bonhams Auction of Doodwood festival of Speed, a right hand drive 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Lightweight was hammered for €919.694 premium included. This car had a succesful racing career in Switzerland in the hands of Peter Zbinden of Basel who would become Swiss National Champion in 1974 in another Porsche 911 Carrera RS In 1993 the car moved to the USA where a no-expense-spared restoration followed. The somewhat heavier brother car, a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring, is expected to catch between $650,000 and $850,000. This car is in a partially restored condition and has just under 100K kilometers on the tacho.

Not the most usual car is the 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Clubsport. Basically this is a street-legal version of the Porsche 993 Carrera Cup race car. With a number of only 213 produced, this is a car that probably will go to a collection, and will not spend the rest of it’s life as a daily driver. The car has only just over 31K kilometers driven and has all the Original owner’s manuals ,service booklets , tool roll jack and so on… Hammer price for this car is expected to be $400,000 – $500,000
Of the 194 cars produced, the 1995 Porsche 911 GT2 that will be offered for sale at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, this car has only drived 11.740 kilometers and was delivered from factory with air conditioning and power windows. This limited homologation special was acquired in Japan by its current owner 13 years ago. It has since been meticulously maintained during this time, including a number of service receipts. Let’s see if the expectations are reached, as they are way north of the 1 million $ mark.
Absolute eyecatcher of the RM Sotheby’s Auction at the Monterey Car Week is the 1970 Porsche 908/03. The Porsche 908/03 is not a car that comes up for sale a lot. And when it comes up for sale, there’s not always a buyer, as the Amelia Island Auction in 2013 proved with a no-sale for Porsche 908/03 Chassis 004. The Porsche 908/03 that RM Sotheby’s offers for sale is chassis number 003, the car that Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood raced to 2nd position overall at the 1970 Nurburgring 1000KM. This particular chassis was used by the Porsche factory for testing and the development of the Porsche 908/03 platform in Weissach. At a recent concours d’Elegance in Schloss Dyck (Germany) the car won a 1st in class.
