Biography Willi Kauhsen
Willi Kauhsen, the self-sufficiant free agent, was born on May 19th 1939. He drove his first race in 1964 with a Porsche 356 Super 90. A year later he bought himself a very competitive 1300 Mini Cooper and won eight races with that car.
After a very successful season in 1966 with an Abart 1300, the Abarth factory offered Willi Kauhsen a seat in a factory racer. In that car Willi Kauhsen won the 1967 European Trophy.
In the 1968 season, Willi Kauhsen co-drives a Porsche 906 Carrera 6 with von Wendt. They win both the Targa Florio and the 1000km of Monza. As a successful and very busy pilot and businessman he only finds time to marry during practice for the 1000Km of the Nürburgring.
In a Porsche 911, Willi Kauhsen wins the 24H of Francorchampsand the Marathon de la Route. Porsche offers him a seat as a works driver in 1969. In a Porsche 908, Willi Kauhsen finishes in the top places at the Targa Florio and at theNurburgring. In Le Mans however, Willi Kauhsen was less succesful. 3 hours before the end of the race, he was forced out while leading the race.
In 1970 Willi Kauhsen was 2nd overall at the 2 liter championship race in Hämeenlinna, Finland. In a Porsche 908 he finishes 6th overall at the 1000Km Nurburgring. His greatest succes in 1970 is in Le Mans, with a 2nd overall finish in a Porsche 917 long tail, sharing the wheel with Gerard Larousse.
In 1971 Willi Kauhsen drives a Porsche 917 in the manufacturers Championship races for the USDAU racing team with Reinhold Joest.
