The 20th edition didn’t attract the big international names from the rallysport, except Jimmy McRae in an Ascona. Despite the absence of the big guys, this edition probably was one of the most exciting.
Bernard Munster, winner of the 2004 edition of the Ypres Historic, and more recently overall winner of the Rally of Moroco, claimed victory in the FIA class. Bernard Munster was overwhelming, as he had to cope with some bad luck (flat tire) and a 5 seconds penalty for leaving the carpark late. Race seemed over for him, but despite all this, he succeeded in beating the competion, and won with an advcance of 6 seconds on the 2nd , Lietaer in an Escort MK2. Bernard Munster drove a Porsche 911 RSR, formerly driven by Walter Schewe, who now drove a Porsche 911 Turbo himself. Schewe’s co-pilot was Willi Pitz, ex winner of the 1974 Ypres Historic with Walter Röhrl.
In the national class,it seemed as if there were no opponents for the Porsches. All 3 podium places taken by a Porsche.. Wim Decock, Glenn Jannsen and Deveux.
Another great event, and now we’re looking forward to the 1st Memorial Serge Messine which will take place September 1st.
