25th Technoclassica

Technoclassica 2013

Technoclassica 2013_60At the press conference , preceding the official opening of the show, the organisation received a large birthday caketo celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Technoclassica. Exactly 25 years ago the organisational committee, familiar with the oldtimer scenedue to the organisation of the Antwerp Classic Salon, learned there was no oldtimer show in Germany. So they started Technoclassica inEssen, in just 2 halls, To their surprise they could welcome about 30000 visitors, about the double of what they expected. Now, 25 years later, you all know what the show is all about. Last year the show had more than 180.000 visitors making it without any doubtthe largest oldtimer show worldwide. The fact that about 30 percent of the visitors aren’t from Germany proves that the show has attracted theinternational attention.

It has become a tradition for me to visit hall 3 first, as this used to be the hall where one could see the most exotic Porsches. Not that I don’t like othervintage cars, but the Zuffenhausen cars are my first love. However, the last few years it seems that some of the exhibitors showing the most exotic Porsches don’t show up at the Technoclassica. Is it the economical crisis? Or don’t they need the exposure of a vintage car show as Technoclassica and do the most fortunate aficionados find their way to them without these shows? Or are these iconic cars becoming just too valuable to be shown to the public? I just don’t know, I can only notice this year there was no Porsche race car like a 550 Spyder, 718, 904 ,906,908and so on … Does this mean you have to stay away from the show ? No, definitely not !!! Even without these iconic racers, there’s way more to experience what Porscheconcerns to be here just 1 day.

It’s no surprise to anyone of you that the Porsche 911 nowadays is the most wanted Porsche ever. Early Porsches 911 seem to be worth their weight in gold. And that reflectsin what is put on display by the different exhibitors. The Porsche 911 is probably the model that can be found at the Technoclassica in about every hall, in condition from crappyto concours. But no matter what the condition is, prices of the 911 keep rising.

There were some very interesting and rare Porsche 356 too, among them some Porsche 356 Carrera’s and a very rare Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. Probably the most interestingPorsche 356 was the Porsche Daetwyler which will be auctioned at the Autotechnikauktion next May. It’s a one-off race car, build on the chassis of a Porsche 356 SC Cabrio, using original Porsche 904 parts like the front and nose of the car. It still has the original Porsche 356 SC engine, and has street-allowance in Switzerland and Germany, which probably makes it possible to put it on the road anywhere in the world.

Just as the previous years, Tecnoclassica gives the opportunity to people who are still in the restoration phase, to find the parts they need at the dozens and dozens of stands offering parts. Froma single bolt to a complete engine, you might find it. All you have to do is spend some time going through the halls, let your eyes flip from left to right and up and down to be sure you won’t miss anything.Literature and memorabilia collectors can spend hours searching all the boxes with thousands and thousand of brochures, manuals and pictures. From the most rare brochure and pictures to the morecommon ones, without any doubt you can find it. And I can assure you, it is worth spending some time to go find some stuff.
