Biography Günther Steckkönig

Günther Steckkönig spent his youth in Degerloch, in the close vicinity of Stuttgart. April 14 1953,  at the age of 17, Günther Steckkönig starts as an apprentice at Porsche. At that time, he was one of the first 8 apprentices at the factory. After his apprenticeship, Steckkönig attended the technical school in Stuttgart. His main occupation during  about 30 years at Porsche, was to test drive the cars.

His experience as a test-driver however, made Günther Steckkönig extremely suitable for a job as a race pilot too. Together with Huschke von Hanstein, he introduced Formula Vee. Steckkönig claims he drove almost all the racing cars that Porsche set on wheels at the time. His first works assignment as a pilot was in 1968. Günther Steckkönig drives a 1967 Porsche 911R at the Marathon de la Route on the Nürburgring and finishes 2nd. In 1970, he becomes the overall winner among the GT sportscars at the Österreich-Ring in a Porsche 914/6.

Le Mans Entries

In his race-career, Günther Steckkönig starts 3 times at the Le Mans 24Hours. His first appearance in 1976 at the endurance race at the circuit de la Sarthe is the most successful. Teaming up with Ernst Kraus, they finish 7th overall in the Porsche 908/3 of the Joest Racing Team. In 1981, he is less lucky. A fire in the Porsche 935, again of the Joest Racing Team, forces Steckkönig to quit the race. 2 years later, in his last participation, he has to leave the race early again. The Porsche 930 he  shares with Claude Haldi suffers with piston problems.

Targa Florio

Günther Steckkönig competed in the Targa Florio three times: in 1971 in the Porsche 914/6 GT, in 1972 in a Porsche 911 S  and in 1973 in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. In 1973, a bit of luck was involved or he couldn’t have started the race. After his arrival, Norbert Singer told him that his co-pilot crashed the car. Immediately Singer proposed to use the training car. Steckkönig had to familiarize with the car during the race, and finished 6th overall. Later he drove the car back to Weissach, without shutting it down because of an electrical problem.

Günther Steckkönig went back to Sicily for the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Targa Florio. He meets up with other Porsche legends like Herbert Linge, Gijs van Lennep and Vic Elford. On this occasion, Steckkönig drives a Porsche 356 B 1600 Carrera GTL Abarth.
