The first Porsche 911 GT2 had its introduction at the 1994 Essen Motor Show. Porsche had not the best times in history, and the higher management even considered closing the motorsport sales department. Despite having sporty cars like the 911 Turbo and the Carrera RS, a car that made eyes blink for its performance was lacking. Hartmut Kristen came in charge to change things. The Porsche 911 GT2, based on the Porsche 911 Turbo was the result.
Between 1995 and 1998, a total of 194 Porsche 911 GT2s were built as streetcars. Another 78 cars left the factory as a pure race cars. The Porsche 911 GT2 meanwhile has a very collectible status. And Jan Koum, best known as co-founder of Whatsapp, is one of the biggest enthusiasts. Together with Christophe Mäder, author of the Porsche 911R book, they delivered another masterpiece describing all you need to need about this iconic model.
The Porsche 911 GT2 book starts with a chapter on the origins of the air-cooled Porsche 911 that covers all the generations up to the 993 model series. It then continues with truly everything that could come to your mind on the Porsche 911 GT2. It covers development, engineering, production, and marketing. The authors succeed in producing a very readable text. And they provide the reader with an overwhelming number of facts and data. Hundreds of pictures, illustrations clarify the text.
Christophe Mäder did an immense effort sourcing information to write the Porsche 911 GT2 book. Full access to the Porsche Archives helped him a lot. On top of that, he spent numerous hours interviewing the people involved in the production of the Porsche 911 GT2. And that includes designers, drivers, race crew members, and Porsche executives.
The appendix shows historic documentation, technical specifications, and includes an index of technical terms and names. Jan Koum did a tremendous job tracking down all the streetcars to create the Catalogue Raisonné.
The book on the GT2 race cars features individual chapters for every version. From the first 96 models to the 96/2 models, to continue with the 98 models. And of course, the authors didn’t forget about the ultra-rare Evo model, which came in two different generations. A section is dedicated to the different racing series, and it covers the 5 motorsports seasons the Porsche 911 GT2 was involved in, with a detailed description of most of the races.
