Preview Mecum Auction in Monterey

1992 Porsche DP 935 - Mecum

The Monterey Car week is always a busy week for the auction houses. The 3 major automotive auctions houses have an auction at the Monterey Peninsula. And ofcourse they all try to outbid the competition. RM Sotheby’s has the most important cars with the iconic Porsche Typ 64, and an ex Works Porsche 718 RS60. Gooding has the ex Otis Chandler Porsche 959 Sport, and a 911 reimagined by Singer. Bonhams brings the ex Christian Goethals 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Spyder Centerseater to the Quail Lodge Auction. Mecum Auctions definitely outbids the major auction houses on the number of cars that come up for sale in their auction in Monterey. And on top of that, Mecum offers a few rarities in the Monterey auction. Let’s take a look.

3 Porsche 918 Spyder

Mecum brings no less than 3 of Porsche’s last super sportscar on the block. It is not that rare to see a Porsche 918 Spyder come up for sale. However, you won’t see 3 of them pop-up in the same auction that often. 2 of the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyders are equipped with the Weissach package. The white one has only 2,872 miles on the counter. The estimated hammer prices is well over $1,500.000. The black 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder has the Weissach package too. With only just under 1500 miles, this one however has a slightly  lower estimation than the previous one. The last one that comes up for auction is another low-mileage vehicle, with just 3,571 original miles. Even though you’ll have to dig deep in your wallet for this one too, price will probably be a way under the hammer price of the previous 2 cars.

1955 Porsche Tempo Mikafa Sport Camper

1955 PORSCHE TEMPO MIKAFA SPORT CAMPER - Mecum
1955 Porsche Tempo Mikafa Sport Camper

Mikafa was known for aircraft manufacturing.  However, the company decided  to expand its capabilities by producing exceptionally well-appointed campers between 1955 and 1959. This example is a Sport Camper, reportedly one of just three built with Porsche badging and a 356 engine from the factory, with a Tempo chassis holding it all together. The Sport Camper is titled as a 1955 Porsche. How cool would it be to show up in this extremely rare  camper at a Porsche event like Rennsport Reunion ? The car is expected to catch between $100,000 and $150,000.

Porsche 935 DP

DP Motorsports was founded in Germany by Ekke Zimmerman in  1973.  After some results in F30, Ekke Zimmerman started working on spoiler modifications of the Porsche 911. After decades of knowledge dp motorsport became an absolute master in building up unique Porsches. In 1979, a Kremer DP conversion  of the Porsche 935, won  the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Klaus Ludwig as one of the pilots. Based on the creations developped for motorsports, Ekke Zimmerman started building conversions for road models too. 4 of the results of this DP conversions will now come up for auction in the Mecum Monterey Auction. 1 of them is the very rare ‘Long Windshield’ example, 1 of an estimated 4 cars produced with this feature.

The Black 1985 Porsche 935 DP is reportedly built for Mario Andretti. The car is the result of the co-operation between the Kremer Brothers in Cologne and DP Motorsports. The cars started life as a Porsche 930 Turbo. First it was first sent to the Kremer Brothers for performance upgrade. Later DP Motorsports fitted of lightweight body panels on the car.

The 1982 Porsche DP RUF was commissioned by a Porsche engineer for the “Car and Driver” magazine test and article. After the changes to the body, the engine was sent to RUF in Pfaffenhausen. Alois Ruf upgraded the engine through an increase in displacement to 3.4L and the installation of a more potent turbo system.

The 1992 Porsche 935 is the last air-cooled DP 935 produced. This car began as a 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo. It is a one-off, and commissioned by the previous owner to look like the German motorsports VLN series championship-winning car piloted by Jurgen Alzen. The car is the result of  a  no-expense-spared build that started with a 964 generation 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo.
