The Monterey Car Week is not only known for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Eyes are pointed to the different auction houses too, since the standards for collector car prices are set there. In total the 5 major auction houses offered close to 1150 cars for sale, which is a little down on the total of over 1200 cars auctioned last year. The cars that changed hands, represented total value of $391,6 million. A staggering amount that is, but well below the expectations and estimations by the renowned Hagerty classic car insurance company.
We can’t judge on the hammerprices of brands other than our beloved Porsche, but as far as we could evaluate, the interest for cars that would have drawn huge attention and heavy bidding about 5 years ago, now remained unsold. Surprisingly, the 2 original Porsche 550 Spyders did not find a hammer in the auction, even though it is reported that there was an after-auction sale for one of them. These cars belong to the heritage of Porsche, and it wonders why collectors with deep pockets nowadays stay away from cars like this. The same goes for the Porsche 906 Carrera 6, a thoroughbred race cars, and fantastic to use in events like Le Mans Classic, Tour Auto or Monterey Historics.
More surprisingly, and that’s my personal opinion, is the huge amount that the Porsches Reimagined by Singer are sold for. We agree these are fabulous cars, but to be honest, these are Porsche 964s that receive a major upgrade, and are mainly created to fullfil the need of the commisisioner. These cars don’t have history, they’re not part of the heritage of Porsche. Apparently I’m losing the feeling with what lives on the market, or is this just a temporary fall in interest in the racing history of Porsche?
