We all know Serge Vanbockryck as the author of the masterpiece “Works Porsche 956 – The Definitive History”. And we all knew it was just waiting for the successor. And just as the Porsche 962 was better than its predecessor, the 3-volume successor “Ultimate Works Porsche 962 – the definitive history” by the hand of Serge Vanbockryck outshines his previous book.

Former journalist Serge Vanbockryck has studied the history of both the Porsche 962 and its equally dominant predecessor for many years. Thousand of hours of work were needed to sort out and read all the documents, articles, and books, and interview key figures involved with these iconic race cars . The result of that giant work is “Ultimate Works Porsche 962 – the definitive history”, with a print run limited to 962 numbered copies.is spread across three volumes, each dedicated to a specific part of the 962’s history.

Volume 1 covers the work years of the Porsche 962. Each and every race in the period 1984–88 with a Works Porsche 962 at the start is covered in detail, including all the technical developments that were tried and tested between races, the strategies used, the successes savored, and the odd defeats explained.

The second volume then focuses on the period described as the ‘Joest years’ from 1989-1994. After the works Rothmans Porsche team’s unexpected withdrawal from the World Sports-Prototype Championship the world of sportscar racing was at a loss. However, a little back door was kept open and earlier developments of what should have been the 962/88 were passed on to Reinhold Joest. All activities with the works and works-supported 962Cs are covered, and again no details remain hidden.

Volume 3 covers the cars and the people. All 19 works chassis (16 Porsche 962s and three Dauer 962 LM GTs) are outlined in exhaustive technical detail, including records of every possible test and race, with all possible statistics and data available. Even gear ratios, fuel consumption figures, and all data used to define strategies during races. Nothing remains uncovered. To be short, a biography of each and every chassis is provided.
And of course, next to the machines, there were the men that made this car so successful. The author pays tribute to these men in career biographies of men like Norbert Singer, Derek Bell, and Jacky Ickx to name just a few.
