No extra ordinary hammer prices at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Scottsdale
The Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix hosted the RM Sotheby’s auction in the Scottsdale Auction week. In a preview a few weeks ago, we told you about the , in our opinion, most interesting cars that came up for sale. And even though it is extremely difficult to predict the results of cars being auctioned, especially when you did not see them with your own eyes, we must admit we expected higher prices for the Porsches being sold at RM Sotheby’s Auction.
In contrast to the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 that remained unsold at the Bonhams Auction in Scottsdale, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 was hammered at $428.500 which is just over the lower estimate of $425.000. The 3 1953 Porsche 356 pre A found a new owner too, and all 3 of them within the estimation fork, or just above. The 1988 Porsche 911 Turbo Flatnose was sold for a rather low $162.400. I guess this must have been a disappointment for the seller, as a lower estimate of $200.000 was set. Hammered at $156.800, about the same price for the 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo Flatnose. Probably the biggest surprise was the hammerprice of the Porsche 936 Junior. High estimate was set at $15.000, and final hammer price was $20.00. Same story for the Porsche Diesel that sold for $44.800
Conclusion
Even though RM Sotheby’s had not the rarest cars in the auction, our opinion is that the market prices have reached their top and are on a slow way down. There will definitely come some auctions with hammerprices that will raise people’s eyebrows. On the other hand, prices for classic Porsches were literally over the top. We think they’re coming closer to a realistic price. On the other hand, we are convinced that the rare and true collector cars and racers with a proven history will remain sought after and catch high prices. The future will show what comes, and that future is soon, with the auctions in Paris coming close.
