It is that time of the year again: Mid-August is marked in the calendars of most car enthusiasts. The beau-monde of the automotive world gathers in Monterey to be part of the infamous Monterey Car Week. This huge celebration of the automobile kicked off last Friday. Next to the Monterey Historics at the Laguna Seca, you have the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. For many enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and collectors the Pebble Beach Auctions are the highlight of the Monterey Car Week. We took a closer look at the catalogs of the major auction houses to see what they had to offer Porsche-wise. And honestly, we were stunned by the selection of cars they have.
In total Gooding&Co, RM Sotheby’s, and Bonhams have over 80 Porsche that will cross the block. We didn’t even count the 911 Dakar Children’s Car and the 917/30 Junior in. Both are nice toys, but probably only for spoiled boys, seen the estimates for these cars. We might see these cars. For the Speedster enthusiast, no less than 6 Porsche 356 Speedsters might draw your attention, next to the 3 Porsche 911 Speedsters of different generations. Both Gooding&Co and RM Sotheby’s bring a 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 to California, and one could name that a rarity as only 55 of these cars have left the factory. We recommend the ‘Porsche 964 Carrera RS 3.8’ book by Jürgen Barth and Norbert Franz to find out more about this astonishing car.
Are you more into older race cars? No problem, what do you think to bid on a genuine Porsche 906 Carrera 6? Chassis 906-140, was completed in April 1966 and delivered new to Kjell Qvale’s Pacific Northwest Porsche in Beaverton, Oregon. The car has both had a racing career, and resided for a while in a private collection among Abarth’s and Ferrari’s. The late Porsche legend Chuck Stoddard even had the cars twice in its possession. Porsche 906 race cars don’t show up for sale that often. And we’ve heard from various drivers it is a fantastic car to compete in historic events. So why not give it a chance?
Hold on, we’re not done yet. 2 more race beauties absolutely need to be mentioned here. And these beauties are even more rare than the Porsche 906 we just mentioned. How big are the odds that 2 Porsche 550 Spyders come up for sale at the same time? The car auctioned at Gooding&Co is chassis 550-041, and started it career in Europe under the ownership of Richard Trenkel. He sold it to Mathieu Hezemans, a Dutch car dealer, who ran the car in several races. Soon he began to share driving duties with Count Carel Godin de Beaufort. Late 1950s the car moved to the USA where it changed hands several times. The other car, auctioned by RM Sotheby’s, is chassis 550-089 and was specifically built for John von Neumann. This car had many owners too and resided for a long while in the Dutch State-of-Art Collection of the late Albert Westerman, who used his 3 Porsche 550 Spyders on a regular base in events like the Mille Miglia to promote his clothing company.
