Are slant-nose and Turbo Porsches the new hype ?
There are a few surprises for me when I look at the results of the Bonhams Quail Lodge aucton. First surprise for me was the no sale of the 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2. As we told in our Bonhams Quail Lodge auction preview, we did not expect the car to sell at a higher price than the estimates. But a no sale for a rare car like the 1963 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 was not what we expected. Furthermore it looks like slant-nose Porsches are climbing the rank of most-wanted Porsches.
Even though the 1989 Porsche 911 slant-nose Turbo Cabriolet was a one-owner car with just over 3500 miles on the counter, a hammer price of $456.000 is way beyond every estimation. Not sure about that but I guess that’s a world-record. Another sky high price was the result for the 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S, another one-ower and very low mileage car. But nevertheless $489.000 euro is a lot, a lot of money.
The price of the Mercedes 500E , the result of a co-operation between Porsche and Mercedes, is in the lift too. Where a similar car fetched just over $72K in the Scottsdale Auction in January, Bonhams sold this one for $100K. Prices for the earlier Porches that were skyrocketing some years ago, are now going downhill. Some don’t even reach the lower estimations. Or is that an issue with auction houses raising too high expectations and putting unrealistic estimations on a car ?
